Monolid Basics

Growing up I was never a fan of my monolids, I never knew how to do my makeup because I’m adopted so my mother didn’t really know how to teach me. But after 22 years I think I’ve figured it out, a little. Trust me, I went through some horrible stages of thick eyeliner and bright blue eye shadow...all over..  It’s always a work in progress, or maybe I should say a new experiment every day.

The most important thing you have to remember about monolids is that you must prime them! My personal favorite is the NYX eyelid base in pearl. It makes the eye shadow colors seem much more vibrant and helps keep it on longer. I’ve always noticed that my eye shadow disappears by noon if I don’t prime them. Sometimes I like to use the NYX (I’m a little obsessed with NYX..) rose gold shadow stick depending on what my look is going to be. I’ve found that that’s worked as a pretty good primer as well.
Another important lessons for you girls with monolids is blend. Blend your heart out, this is true for all eyes, eliminate those harsh lines to create a nice put together look!
Right now I’m really into neutral eye shadow colors, I’ve been using the new Maybelline nude palette and I am seriously in love. In. Love. The palette comes with a whole bunch of nice nude colors that make it perfect for a more formal look or more casual look depending on how you feel that day.

Also, girl, if you have monolids, you have to tight line those eyes. This means get as close to the lash line as possible. I have skimpy little eyelashes so this also helps make them appear a little fuller and not so sparse. I do this on both the top and the bottom. Now, your eyeliner depends on how you feel that day. For me, if I’m feeling a little more innocent or wanting to look a little younger, I like to apply a little thicker of a line on top of that tight line and then instead of creating a wing upward, you pull the line down. This creates sort of a cute puppy dog eye look that makes you look younger and innocent I think. I learned it watching a video on uzzlang makeup and fell in love. Now if you’re feeling sexier and bolder I like to create a wing with my eyeliner. This one is harder for me because my brow bone is not very defined so I have a hard time deciding where to put the wing and how far up to go. You just got to experiment until you find what you think looks good!

If you have short eyelashes like me, then curling them and applying lots of mascara works really well to make them look better. I’m not a big fan of falsies for daytime looks, simply because I get annoyed I think and I haven’t found the perfect pair… but I think curling and applying mascara is a good substitute!
Don’t forget to finish whatever look you chose by filling in your eyebrows! It’s important!
Maybe if I feel bold enough I’ll post a tutorial of one of my day-to-day looks!

Don’t be afraid to try something new, make up is all about finding what suites your style and what you’re comfortable doing.

xoxo
